Fact Check: Ukrainian Authorities DID NOT Announce a Tiktok Ban No ban

Did Ukrainian authorities say that they are going to ban TikTok in Ukraine? No, that's not true: an Ukrainian citizen has created a petition asking to ban TikTok in Ukraine, but it hasn't collected the required number of signatures yet to be considered by the President's Office.

The claim appeared in a video (archived here) published on TikTok on March 27, 2023, under the title "Ukrainian government wants to ban TikTok."

Below is how the post appeared on TikTok at the time of this writing :

It opened:

The President's office is afraid of criticism, exposure of corruption and looting and restricts freedom of speech as much as possible.

The claim spread on TikTok and appeared in other accounts, like this one:

The caption reads:

Zelenskyy wants to shut down TikTok.

There is a petition "To ban TikTok in Ukraine at least until the war is over." At the moment of writing, the petition hasn't collected the required number of signatures to be considered by the President's Office.

Every citizen of Ukraine can create and register a petition on the website of the President's Office. Once the petition collects enough signatures, it is reviewed by the Office of the President, where it can be upheld or rejected.
